A single waterproof shade structure 8m x 5m was built to replace lightweight umbrellas which were unable to cope with the wind pressures of a beach environment. Engineered to withstand W41 wind loads, the structure is supported by only two upright posts. Few posts enable the client to position seating freely around the structure as needed. Sides are secured into framework to maximise shade area and make provision for clear cafe blinds at a later time. The framework has many scrolling or curved features representing the rolling waves of the beach. White was chosen for crispness and as a contrast to sky and water.
